Spire Cheshire Hospital patient to have second knee replaced by robotic knee surgery technology, ROSA
Andrew Gosling, 52, a Design Engineer, had enjoyed regular sporting activities for 35 years, until he began to feel plagued by consistent and worsening knee pain. Along with the discomfort, he also experienced stiffness and a lack of mobility in his knee joints.
Already accustomed to knee treatments, having undergone previous arthroscopies, he was told to prepare for future knee replacements due to articular cartilage wear and arthritis inside both of his knees.
When Andrew reached a point of no longer being able to walk for longer than ten minutes without feeling agonizing pain in his left knee, he knew that something had to be done.
His worsening mobility was preventing Andrew from going on regular walks with his partner and playing golf with his son.
Meeting Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Professor Pradhan
Andrew started to research surgeons that could perform his left total knee replacement. Professor Nikhil Pradhan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Spire Cheshire Hospital, was highly recommended by many of his previous patients, so Andrew booked a consultation with him.
Andrew says, “After 20 minutes of discussion, I knew that Prof Pradhan could help me; I was totally confident he would get me back to doing the things I was missing out on. I was put completely at ease by Prof Pradhan.
He advised that in order to return to the activities that I love, my best option would be to undergo a ROSA-assisted robotic surgery total knee replacement.”
Surgery using the ROSA knee system offers a more precise alternative to traditional surgery, meaning more patients may be able to recover faster and achieve a greater degree of joint flexibility, allowing them a quicker return to normal activity.
ROSA robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery
On the day of Andrew’s surgery, Andrew describes feeling really well cared for: “From being greeted by the admissions staff, to being put at ease prior to my operation by Professor Pradhan, the day itself went as smoothly as it possibly could.
“Everyone dedicated time to allay my fears, and the nurses were brilliant. I was made to feel like nothing was too much trouble!”
The aftercare aspect of Andrew’s care was thorough and well considered. Professor Pradhan was pleased with Andrew’s 24 hour post-operative X-ray, and Andrew was pleasantly surprised to be walking with the aid of crutches the day following his operation.
Spire Cheshire Hospital’s Physiotherapy team gave him a comprehensive exercise routine to practise to aid his recovery.
After six weeks Andrew was driving again; after eight weeks he felt well enough to return to work part time.
Not only this, but Andrew was delighted to be back at the driving range with his son 12 weeks post-operation!
Life after surgery – and looking forward to a second ROSA knee replacement
The greatest benefit to Andrew’s life following his first knee replacement is the complete eradication of pain in his left knee, as well as his greatly improved range of movement.
He is so happy with his outcome that he has booked his ROSA knee replacement for his right knee.
Andrew’s experience with Professor Pradhan and Spire Cheshire Hospital is overwhelmingly positive.
He says, “I would recommend Prof Pradhan without hesitation. His calm and professional manner combined with his expertise made me feel I was in excellent hands.
He listened carefully to the issues I had been having and gave an honest assessment of the outcome he expected for my case; and the results speak for themselves!”
Andrew Gosling back to doing what he loves after knee surgery
Commenting on Andrew’s case, Professor Nikhil Pradhan says, “Andrew is a young patient with an active lifestyle. He enjoys golf and likes to keep himself physically fit.
Andrew’s knee pain was disabling and affected his daily activities.
Pain causes physical impairment in function and can cause mental anguish affecting personal, professional and family life.
Robotic assisted knee replacement (ROSA) is the latest advancement in knee replacement surgery and provides live feedback during surgery, which helps improve accuracy and precision.
With ROSA robotic-assisted knee replacement, Andrew has achieved his goal for a pain-free knee with excellent function. He is back playing golf and enjoying his family life.
I wish him well for the knee replacement on his other knee.”
